It is quite straightforward (with the help of a workshop manual) to service and overhaul your own carburettors. Both fuel economy and performance can suffer through lack of carburettor maintenance and with the recent tightening of the MOT regulations regarding ‘Exhaust Emission’, it is important that they are properly maintained in good working order. Incorrectly adjusted or worn carb’s (as well as poorly maintained ignition systems) can also cause premature engine wear, because unburned fuel that remains in the cylinders causes ‘bore-wash;’ which eventually glazes the bores, resulting in excessive oil consumption.
